TMJ, Night guard

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is a condition that affects the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. Common symptoms of TMJ disorder include jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, difficulty chewing or speaking, and headaches. Night guards, also called occlusal guards, are dental appliances that can help relieve the symptoms of TMJ disorder by preventing teeth grinding and clenching during sleep.

At iSmiles Dentistry, we offer customized night guard to our patients with TMJ disorder. Our dental professionals will work with you to create a nightguard that fits comfortably and effectively addresses your TMJ symptoms.

What to expect with Night guards?

Night guards are typically made of a hard, plastic material and are custom-fitted to the patient's teeth. They are worn at night while sleeping to provide a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, preventing them from grinding against each other. This can help to prevent tooth damage, reduce jaw pain, and improve overall sleep quality.

The process of getting a night guard typically involves the following steps:

  1. Evaluation: The dentist will evaluate the patient's teeth and jaw to determine if a night guard is necessary.

  2. Impressions: The dentist will take impressions of the patient's teeth to create a mold that will be used to fabricate the night guard.

  3. Fitting: Once the night guard is fabricated, the patient will try it in to ensure a comfortable fit.

  4. Adjustments: If necessary, the dentist will make adjustments to the night guard to ensure a proper fit and comfortable wear.

  5. Follow-up: The dentist will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor the patient's progress and make any necessary adjustments to the night guard.

Night guards can be an effective solution for patients who suffer from bruxism. They are relatively easy to wear and maintain, and can provide significant relief from the negative effects of teeth grinding and clenching.
